If you are a Black creative living in London or Glasgow and seeking opportunities in the creative industries, you may have already faced some challenges when pitching your ideas. We know it can be a daunting task. Despite progress in promoting diversity and inclusion in the creative industries, systemic biases still exist, making it challenging to get your ideas noticed. In this blog post, we'll explore the dos and don'ts of pitching your creative ideas as a Black creative and why staying true to yourself and your unique perspective is essential.
DO:
  • Before pitching your idea, it's essential to do your research. Research the company, its values, and the work it produces. Familiarize yourself with their work and values, and tailor your pitch accordingly. This will show that you have put in the effort to understand their needs, and your idea will be more compelling.
  • Be confident and passionate. Confidence and passion are key when pitching your creative ideas. Believe in your idea and convey enthusiasm to the person you pitch to. This will help them understand why your idea is worth pursuing.
  • Highlight your unique perspective and be authentic. As a Black creative, you have a unique perspective that can bring value to the creative industries. Use this to your advantage and showcase how your idea can contribute to a more diverse and inclusive industry. Be bold in showcasing this in your pitch. Authenticity is vital to creating a lasting impression and making your idea stand out in a crowded field.
  • Practice makes perfect. Practice your pitch. Take some time to rehearse your pitch before presenting it. This will help you come across as confident and credible and will give you the best chance of getting your idea noticed.
  • Highlight the impact of your idea, and be sure to articulate the benefits of your idea clearly and compellingly. Highlighting the impact of your idea will make it more tangible and relevant to your audience, making it more likely that they will be receptive to it.
  • After pitching your idea, follow up with the person you spoke to. This shows you are invested in your idea and committed to making it happen.
  • Pitching your creative ideas can be long and arduous, but persistence is key. If, at first, you fail, keep trying. Your ideas are valuable, and they deserve to be heard.

DON'T:
  • As a Black creative, it can be tempting to conform to industry norms to get ahead. But compromising your values can be damaging in the long run and undermine what makes your perspective unique. Do not compromise your values.
  • Assume racial biases don't exist. Unfortunately, systemic biases still exist in some workplaces, and it's important to be aware of this. However, it's also important not to let this discourage you. Your ideas are valuable, and they deserve to be heard.
  • Use overly technical language. When presenting your idea, be sure to use language that is clear and easy to understand. Avoid using overly technical terms that might confuse or alienate your audience.
  • While being confident and passionate is essential, it's also important not to come across as too pushy. Remember that the person you are pitching to has their own priorities and responsibilities, so be respectful of their time and needs.
  • Neglect your presentation. Your presentation is just as important as your idea. Use visuals, such as slides or images, to help convey your idea. A well-designed presentation can help make your idea more compelling.
  • Pitching your creative ideas can be challenging, but it's important not to give up. Keep pursuing your ideas and seeking out opportunities to pitch them. Your persistence and determination will pay off in the end.

Pitching your ideas as a Black creative can be challenging. Still, your unique perspective and valuable ideas will add significant value to the creative industries. By staying true to yourself, being persistent, and highlighting the impact of your ideas, you can increase your chances of success and make a lasting impression.
